Cystostereum murraii (Berk. & Curt.) Pouzar Fruit body grows firmly attached along a vertical surface in crusty patches up to 20cm across; upper surface has edges turned a few mm outward and distinctly bounded; upper surface whitish to grayish or ochrewhite, spotting slightly brownish when bruised, lower surface brown; upper surface uneven, warty, with concentric ribs and cracks when dry. Flesh hard, tough, crust-like. Odor agreeable, like coconut (when fresh), odorless when dry. Spores ellipsoid, smooth, 4.5-5 x 2-3µ. Habitat growing on dead trunks and branches of hardwoods at higher elevations. Found in New York and presumably other states. Season all year. Not edible. |
